Techtip of December 2007 - Multiple Trace References in Model Views
by Laszlo Nagy, Budapest, Hungary
I kind of don't like the limitation that only one Viewpoint/View/Layout can be displayed as a Reference in a Model View or Layout. I found out a workaround about how we can still do it.
It is a lot simpler, than it seems - and you can have the good old 'paper feeling' back
To place multiple trace references in a Model View/Viewpoint, follow the below simple steps:
- Create a new Layout in the Layout Book (use the Navigator and the context menu to keep it simple) that you will use for this specific purpose and give it a reasonable name eg 'Trace Layout'
- In the layout, place the sections/elevations or floor plans that you want to use as trace references, as you used in the 'good old days' - eg place the floor beneath at the bottom of this layout, the section on say the left side and an elevation above etc.
- Make sure the space needed for 'drawing' the floor plan you want is left uncovered - ie in the layout the area that you want to use when designing is clear (blank) of other drawings in the layout
- Now go to the Model Viewpoint in which you want to use the trace references in
In Navigator, click on the 'Layout Book' button and locate the trace references layout you've just created
Right click on its name and in the context menu choose 'Show as Trace Reference'
Voilá - your multiple trace references appear on the 'sheet'
Hint: you can always turn on or off trace references from the 'View' menu by clicking once on the 'Trace' line (switch).
Hint2: If you want to update the trace references you are using with the changes done in the Model Viewpoint, just select the drawing of the layout with the arrow tool, right click on its node and from the Context menu choose 'Trace>Switch Reference with Active' and you will be back in the 'Trace Layout'. Here just update all drawings and then navigate back to your Model Viewpoint you are working in.
