Using a shortcut to make switching between layer combos even quicker

TechTip of the Month winner of 2006 June - by BenFrost

"I have the Show/hide quick options palette assigned to a single key shortcut (Q), which pops it up right in the middle of the screen and closes it again when I'm done . . . works well."

This allows you to very quickly switch from one layer combo to another - using ArchiCAD10's new feature, the Quick Options dialog.

To assign a single key shortcut to a command, you must open the below dialog:

Options/Work Environment/Keyboard Shortcuts...

(Full XP path is: Options/Work Environment/Keyboard Shortcuts/Window/Pallettes/Hide Show Quick Options. (Create Shortcut)). Added by Logan

Under Customize Keyboard Shortcuts, choose to List: All commands by theme, then open the tree subset called 10 Window and look for Show/Hide Quick Options – this should be highlighted in blue.

To the right of it (Create new shortcut), click in the field beside Click here and press desired shortcut keys: and hit the Q button – a Q will appear in this box.

Now if there is already a shortcut assigned to this button, it will appear in the field below (like in our case, Q is assigned to Show/Hide Guide Lines (which is, btw, a nice feature of its own).

If the command already has a shortcut assigned to it, this will appear in the third field from the top Shortcut(s) for selected command.

If there is no shortcut assigned to the button you chose, just push the Assign button; in case the key is already in use, but you want to re-assign it, click on the appearing Assign anyway button.

Your shortcut is now assigned to the chosen key/button. Click on OK to close this dialog and enjoy your new shortcut :)

Please note: shortcuts functioning in Text Type windows may only be edited if this dialog window is opened whilst a Text Type window is active, the same goes for Non-text type window of course.

P.S. Quick Options is a handy new way to allow for adjusting your work environment - check out for yourself what else it can do than just switching between layer combos...
