Remote Key Upgrade
Important Information for Mac OSX Lion Users about Key Upgrade
On Mac OSX Lion 10.7 "The Keyplug Driver Must be updated" message may appear when visiting our upgrade site even if the drivers are installed correctly.
For more details see: Bugs/KeyUpgradeProblemOnLion
WIBU hardware protection keys (WibuKey and CodeMeter) for ArchiCAD can be remotely programmed via https://upgrade.graphisoft.com . If you have recently purchased ArchiCAD, you will receive an empty keyplug (either a plastic teal-colored key called WibuKey or a metal key called CodeMeter) that you need to "load" through the upgrade site. If you are an ArchiCAD subscriber, software upgrades are automatically enabled for your key as they are available. You need to use the same site to upgrade your key.
Upgrades managed through upgrade.graphisoft.com include ArchiCAD, MEP Modeler, EcoDesigner, Virtual Building Explorer and license borrowing products. If you have more than one Graphisoft products attached to your key, you will need to upgrade each of them one by one.
If you are transferring your licenses from WibuKey to CodeMeter, please download this PDF that will take you through the process.
Requirements
To use the upgrade site, you need:
- a key that is eligible for upgrade
- internet connection
a compatible WibuKey or CodeMeter driver installed (use the ArchiCAD install DVD to install the correct drivers. The drivers from wibu.com may not be compatible with the upgrade site)
- On Windows, Internet Explorer (other browsers are not supported)
- On Mac, Safari (other browsers are not supported)
- up-to-date Java environment (make sure operating system updates are installed)
Process
Install the WibuKey or CodeMeter driver from the ArchiCAD install DVD. Always use the latest driver from the install DVD or Graphisoft's WIBU download page. Do not use the drivers from wibu.com. Make sure the keyplug is NOT attached while you are installing the driver.
- Reboot your computer.
- Plug the hardware key into your computer. Make sure only one keyplug is attached at a time.
- Make sure ArchiCAD is not running. If you are upgrading a NET key, make sure that no one is using ArchiCAD licenses from that key.
- Launch Internet Explorer (on PC) or Safari (on Mac). Note that other browsers are not supported.
Visit https://upgrade.graphisoft.com - enable the Java applet when prompted.
- Select the preferred language.
- Click on the image of the key you have.
- Select the key you would upgrade and click on check keyplug. (Products with 128-xxxxxxx format keyplug number are the license files of the soft borrowing. These cannot be managed here.)
- In case your selected keyplug is empty, the recently purchased license will appear and be available for programming. Click Upgrade/Load Selected keyplug button at the bottom of the page.
In case your selected keyplug is already programmed, the current content and the content after this programming will appear on the page. Click Upgrade/Load Selected keyplug button at the bottom of the page.
- Please confirm your choice by clicking OK in the upcoming windows.
- After the confirmation, click Start Programming in the upcoming windows. Please don’t unplug the keyplug during the process.
- As the last step, the programmed license will appear. Now you can unplug the keyplug.

If the driver is updated but you still get an error message, then:
