How to convert ArchiCAD 7.0 and older projects and LAY files
Converting ArchiCAD 7.0 and older Projects
ArchiCAD 10 can open ArchiCAD 6.5, 7.0, 8, 8.1 and 9 Project Files only. You cannot open ArchiCAD 6.0 or earlier versions of Project Files directly in ArchiCAD 10. Please use an intermediate ArchiCAD version to convert them to a usable file format. It is strongly recommended that you create an archive file (.pla) of each Project File you worked on with older ArchiCAD versions. Move a Project File onto ArchiCAD 10 only after you have archived it with the previous version.
Converting LAY files from older Projects
ArchiCAD 10 is an integrated environment with all functions previously available in ArchiCAD 9 and PlotMaker 9 integrated into the ArchiCAD program. All data are stored in Project Files (PLN files). With this change, the possibility of opening PlotMaker Layouts (LAY files) and saving Layout Books (LBK files) is discontinued in ArchiCAD 10. This presents a case to be solved when trying to migrate PlotMaker Layouts into ArchiCAD 10, where these PlotMaker Layouts were created in PlotMaker versions prior to PlotMaker 3 (PlotMaker 3 was part of the ArchiCAD 8 package).
The answer lies in the fact that ArchiCAD can open Layout Books (LBK files) created in PlotMaker 3 and later (ArchiCAD 8 package and later). So the procedure is to open an LAY file created in an earlier version in ArchiCAD 9 (or ArchiCAD 8 or 8.1), save it as an LBK file and open or merge that file in ArchiCAD 10.
The step-by-step procedure is the following:
1. Open the LAY file in PlotMaker 9.
The Layout will be converted into a Layout Book containing one Layout.
2. Save the Layout Book (it will be saved in LBK format).
3. Open this LBK file in ArchiCAD 10.
The Layout Book will become part of the Project File of ArchiCAD 10.
