ArchiCAD 14 Install and Startup Problems

For version independent information see: Install

ArchiCAD hangs on first start after install (Mac and PC)

Issue: After launching the program ArchiCAD hangs with a spinning ball after it finishes opening the program

Solution: Unplug the Hardware Protection key and start ArchiCAD 14 in Demo mode. Quit ArchiCAD, re-plug the hardware protection key, and start ArchiCAD.

The possible cause of this problem is that ArchiCAD was installed while the hardware protection key was plugged. During installing, it is recommended to remove the protection key.

ArchiCAD hangs or crashes on first start after install with a blank splash screen (PC)

Issue: A white screen rectangle appears where the splash screen would normally be, and just stays there. If you click into the white rectangle, the bug reporter comes up

Solution: This seems to be caused by a corrupt QuickTime install. Remove QuickTime, then re-install it from the ArchiCAD install DVD. Sometimes also it is necessary to run QuickTime Player after the installation.

ArchiCAD crashes on first start after install (Mac)

Issue: When launching the program ArchiCAD crashes (Mac)

Solution: Make sure that under "System Preferences/Universal Access" the "Enable access for assistive devices" checkbox is turned off

The cause of this crash is incompatibility between ArchiCAD and some applications that modify the behavior of the user interface (e.g. LazyMouse, QuickKeys or Spell Catcher). Turning the above option off will disable such applications.

"GSRoot.Dll not found" error message on first start after install (PC only)

Issue: After launching the program ArchiCAD displays "GSRoot.Dll not found" error

Solution: This is probably caused by a Virus Scanner that has quarantined this file. Disable the Virus Scanner for the time of installing ArchiCAD

{i} Other files can be also blocked by a Virus Scanner.

"IFC 2x3 add-on is not registered libEdmi.dylib not found" error message appears when starting ArchiCAD (Mac only)

Issue: ArchiCAD was installed on a case sensitive volume, which is not supported

Solution: Use a not case sensitive file system.

{i} To check whether your file system is case sensitive: launch Disk Utility, select the partition where ArchiCAD is installed, and check the Format: field at the bottom.

"The specified directory is an ArchiCAD directory..." error message

Issue: During the install process, after specifying folder for installation, you recieve an error message saying: "The specified directory is an ArchiCAD directory. Please select a different directory, which is not an ArchiCAD directory."

Solution: Check through all the folders along the path of the specified installation folder and look for existing ArchiCAD.exe or ArchiCAD.app files along the path. You are either trying to install ArchiCAD in another ArchiCAD's folder, or there is another copy of ArchiCAd in one of the folders specified in the path. E.g. If you have an ArchiCAD.app file directly in the "Applications" folder, you will not be able to install ArchiCAD into the "Applications/Graphisoft/ArchiCAD 14" folder.

The installer stops responding at the intro or the installer window does not appear

Solution: Uninstall all versions of Java, reboot and run the installer again. Java will be reinstalled automatically by the ArchiCAD installation. In case of hotfix installation: install the version from the installation DVD. More about Java compatibility: Install

"Quicktime is outdated or missing" error message (PC)

Solution 1: Uninstall QuickTime(s) from your system, and restart your computer. Browse the ArchiCAD 14 installation DVD for the "QuickTime" folder and run the installer. If that does not work, then:

Solution 2: Delete the "Program Files\Common Files\Graphisoft Shared" folder ("Program Files (x86)..." on 64-bit Windows). Browse the ArchiCAD 14 installation DVD for the "SUPPORT" folder and run "GSQtComInstaller.exe" (run it with right click/run as administrator option - this is required even the current user has administrator rights).
The file can be also downloaded from here: Download GSQtComInstaller.zip
If ArchiCAD still won't start, then:

Solution 3: Run the vcredist installers, also from the "SUPPORT" folder. (Run "vcredist_x86.exe" on 32-bit Windows, and both "vcredist_x64.exe" and "vcredist_x86.exe" on 64-bit Windows.)
The packages can be also downloaded from Microsoft: Download vcredist_x86.exe Download vcredist_x64.exe

"Quicktime is outdated or missing" error message (Mac)

Solution: In case this comes on a Mac which was restored from a disk image: Uninstall ArchiCAD and install it again. Also make sure that OSX is up to date.
